A shocking daylight theft of LPG cylinders in Bengaluru has raised fresh concerns over public safety and supply shortages, even as residents struggle with an ongoing cooking gas crisis.
Daylight theft caught on camera
In a brazen incident in Begur, south Bengaluru, two helmet-clad men were caught on CCTV stealing domestic LPG cylinders from a residential property.
The footage shows one suspect waiting on a scooter while the other enters the compound, swiftly lifting two cylinders before fleeing within seconds, suggesting a well-planned operation.
Shortage fuels rise in thefts
The incident comes at a time when Bengaluru is reportedly facing a severe shortage of LPG. Supply disruptions linked to global tensions have made cooking gas scarce, increasing its demand and value.
Residents across parts of the city have reported difficulty in obtaining cylinders, with many turning to alternative cooking methods such as electric induction stoves.
Pattern of organised activity
Police sources indicate that similar thefts have been reported in areas including Kalyan Nagar and Channapatna, pointing to a possible organised network targeting LPG cylinders.
Authorities believe stolen cylinders are being resold in the black market at higher prices due to the ongoing shortage.
Crackdown on illegal stockpiling
In a related development, Thalaghattapura police recently seized over 150 LPG cylinders from an illegal storage facility. A gas agency operator has been booked under the Essential Commodities Act for alleged hoarding.
Investigation underway
Begur police have launched a manhunt to identify and arrest the suspects involved in the theft. Officials are also examining links between individual thefts and larger supply rackets.
Public urged to stay alert
Authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant and secure LPG cylinders within their premises. The incident underscores the broader impact of supply disruptions on everyday life and safety.
