Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has backed the BCCI’s decision to shift the IPL 2026 final from Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium to Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.

The move had earlier sparked debate among cricket fans, especially supporters in Karnataka, after Bengaluru lost the opportunity to host the tournament’s biggest match.

Gavaskar supports venue change

Speaking on the issue, Gavaskar reportedly defended the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s decision, stating that larger requirements and operational considerations may have influenced the venue selection.

The BCCI had earlier cited “requirements” while explaining the shift, though reports suggested additional logistical and organisational factors were also taken into account.

Ahmedabad remains preferred venue for marquee events

The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad has regularly hosted major cricket events because of its massive seating capacity and infrastructure. The stadium has previously staged IPL finals, ICC matches, and international fixtures attracting huge crowds.

Many cricket observers believe the BCCI views Ahmedabad as a suitable venue for large-scale sporting spectacles due to its facilities and crowd management capabilities.

Fans divided over decision

The decision has triggered mixed reactions online. While some fans agreed with Gavaskar’s views and pointed to Ahmedabad’s larger capacity, others felt Bengaluru deserved the opportunity considering its passionate cricket culture and long IPL association.

Supporters of Royal Challengers Bengaluru expressed disappointment over the venue change, saying the city’s cricket fans had eagerly awaited hosting the final.

Despite the controversy, excitement around Indian Premier League 2026 remains high as teams continue their race toward playoff qualification.
