Bengaluru: A 27-year-old woman employee of HDFC Bank was killed after being hit by a speeding motorcycle while crossing a busy road during her lunch break in Rajajinagar. The victim, identified as Yogeshwari, sustained severe injuries in the collision and later died in hospital, police said.
Accident occurred on Dr Rajkumar Road
The accident took place when Yogeshwari stepped out of her office building with a colleague for lunch and attempted to cross Dr Rajkumar Road, a major commercial stretch in West Bengaluru. According to preliminary investigation and CCTV footage, the two colleagues paused at the roadside while vehicles were passing.
Police said the colleague stopped to allow an approaching motorcycle to go by. However, Yogeshwari allegedly misjudged the speed and distance of the oncoming vehicle and attempted to cross. CCTV visuals show her running across the road in an effort to get to the other side when the motorcycle struck her.
The impact threw her onto the road, while the rider lost control and skidded a short distance ahead.
Victim suffered fatal internal injuries
Bystanders and passersby rushed to help immediately after the crash and arranged for emergency transport. Yogeshwari, a resident of Kempegowda Layout, was first taken to Suguna Hospital for treatment.
Doctors found that she had suffered severe internal bleeding and multiple traumatic injuries. Despite emergency medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries. Her body was later shifted to Victoria Hospital for post-mortem examination as part of medico-legal procedure.
Hospital sources indicated that the force of the collision caused critical internal trauma, which proved fatal within a short time.
Rider also injured, under treatment
The motorcycle rider has been identified as Deepan (22). He too sustained injuries after losing control of the vehicle and falling during the skid. He is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital. His condition is reported to be stable.
Police said the rider will be questioned in detail once his medical condition permits. Investigators are verifying his speed, licence status, and whether any traffic violations were involved at the time of the crash.
The motorcycle has been seized for mechanical inspection to rule out brake or control failure.
CCTV footage forms key evidence
CCTV footage from nearby buildings has captured the entire sequence of events, including the victim attempting to cross and the motorcycle striking her. Investigators are analysing the footage frame by frame to determine the exact speed of the vehicle and pedestrian movement.
Traffic police officials said the footage will be used to reconstruct the accident and fix responsibility. Statements from the colleague who was walking with Yogeshwari and other eyewitnesses are also being recorded.
Case registered, probe under way
Police have registered a case of causing death by negligence and rash driving and have initiated a formal investigation. Officers are also examining whether proper pedestrian crossing facilities exist at the spot and if additional traffic calming measures are needed.
Road safety experts note that misjudging vehicle speed on wide arterial roads is a frequent cause of pedestrian fatalities. Authorities have reiterated the need for pedestrians to use designated crossings and for motorists to slow down near commercial office zones.
The tragic incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of pedestrians in high-traffic business corridors and the importance of strict speed discipline.
