Hidden Gem in Malleswaram: Bangalore Boulder at Panchavati

Tucked away in the leafy expanse of Panchavati, Sir C. V. Raman’s former residence in Malleswaram, is a well-kept secret for bouldering enthusiasts – Bangalore Boulder. Operating for the last three years, this indoor bouldering facility attracts both amateur and professional rock climbers who come through word of mouth.

The facility is located behind the bungalow, within a 2.5-acre campus that remains mostly private, with access granted during specific events like science camps, teacher training, or cultural gatherings such as the ongoing BLR Hubba. Though the space is not open to the public regularly, visitors can enter if they specify their purpose at the gate.

Bangalore Boulder features 15-foot climbing walls, adorned with holds of various shapes and colors, designed to mimic a painter’s splatter on a canvas. Safety measures are taken seriously, with crash pads placed beneath the walls and the requirement of climbing shoes and chalk powder. Although the activity doesn’t involve ropes or helmets, climbers are encouraged to wear shoes, which are available for rent. The facility also hosts competitions, corporate events, and birthday parties.

The project was made possible through a partnership with Vivek Radhakrishnan, C. V. Raman’s grandson, a sports enthusiast. Looking ahead, the Raman Research Institute Trust plans to transform Panchavati into a public hub for arts and science by 2026, offering activities that inspire creativity and learning for children.
