Bengaluru: Actors Ajay Devgn and Sudeep’s banter on Twitter seems to be gaining political colour with Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, Opposition Leader Siddaramaiah and JD (S) Leader Kumaraswamy rallying behind Sudeep.

Regional languages are supreme in their respective states, said Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, who emphasised on Thursday April 28 that everyone should understand and respect that.

Following Kannada film star Kichcha Sudeep’s response to Bollywood star Ajay Devgn on Twitter about the national language, Bommai said, “What Sudeep said is right. After the linguistic reorganisation of states, mother tongue or regional language has become important and dominant in states. Everyone should understand and respect that.”

On Twitter on Wednesday night, Ajay Devgn and Kiccha Sudeep got into a heated dispute about India’s national language. The trigger for the better was a statement made by Sudeep a few days ago in a function to celebrate Yash starrer KGF-2’s nation-wide success in the City that Hindi is no more a national language in the context of a Kannada film having such a massive effect nation-wide. Following this, the situation has escalated as several politicians came forward with their reaction to the tweets.

Not to be left behind, Siddaramaiah took to Twitter saying, “Hindi was never & will never be our National Language. It is the duty of every Indian to respect linguistic diversity of our country. Each language has its own rich history for its people to be proud of. I am proud to be a Kannadiga!!”

Kumaraswamy too echoed similar sentiments as CM and Siddu while backing Sudeep.

“Actor @KicchaSudeep saying that Hindi is not a National Language is correct. There is nothing to find fault in his statement. Actor @ajaydevgn is not only hyper in nature but also shows his ludicrous behaviour,” tweeted Kumaraswamy on Thursday.

“India is a garden of several languages. Land of multi cultures. Let there be no attempts to disrupt this,” he further said and added, “Just because a large population speaks Hindi, it doesn’t become a national language as less than nine states from Kashmir to Kanyakumari have Hindi as second or third language or not even that. So what is the truth in Devgn’s statement and what does he mean by not to dub? Kumaraswamy questioned. He asserted that from the beginning, Hindi-based political parties at the Centre have been making efforts to destroy regional languages.

Actors react

Actor and activist Chetan Ahimsa chided Ajay Devgn for his statements, saying, “Mr Pan Masala Ajay Devgn, it is better for you to be quiet rather than talking. Look at your arrogance and ignorance. Hindi was never our national language and it will not be a national language. Your words remind us that stars are empty vessels.”

Kannada hero Sathish Neenasam wrote addressing to Devgn that “Hindi movies have made money since years in Karnataka. Kannada movies have just set their foot in Hindi territory. Respect us like how we have respected you. Hindi was never our national language, we support you Kichcha Sudeep sir,” he said.
