Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has unveiled the ninth edition of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) for 2024. The rankings highlight the top research institutions in India, with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru securing the top position. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras and IIT Delhi follow, ranking second and third, respectively.
This year’s NIRF rankings reveal a strong dominance of IITs in the research category, with seven of the top 10 spots occupied by IIT institutions. The evaluation criteria have also seen changes: the faculty-to-student ratio for medical institutes has been adjusted from 1:15 to 1:10, while state government universities now have an increased ratio of 1:20. The NIRF framework assesses institutions based on five broad parameters: teaching, learning and resources; research and professional practice; graduation outcomes; outreach and inclusivity; and perception.
In the previous year, IISc Bengaluru topped the research category as well, with IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, and IIT Kharagpur securing the subsequent top positions.
