Residents of Raghavendra Layout, near Gubbalala Lake in Uttarahalli, are protesting against the unchecked rise of unauthorized factories and workshops in their residential area. These industrial units have led to air and noise pollution, groundwater contamination, and traffic congestion—issues that have remained unaddressed despite repeated complaints to BBMP.

Over the years, multiple plywood factories, automobile workshops, mattress warehouses, spray-painting units, and carpentry shops have mushroomed in the locality. Residents claim these businesses are both illegal and hazardous.

“The spray-painting units release toxic particles into the air, making it hard to breathe. My son’s persistent cough is likely due to pollution,” said Ravindra R, a Gubbalala resident. Uma S added, “The constant noise from heavy machinery disrupts our daily lives. Why is BBMP ignoring our plight?

Apart from air and sound pollution, locals are worried about chemical waste from these factories, which could contaminate borewell water and jeopardize Gubbalala Lake’s restoration efforts. “The government spent crores on lake rejuvenation, yet these factories are polluting it again,” said Rajeshwari K.

Residents also blame these unregulated industries for worsening traffic congestion on Gubbalala Main Road. Some allege BBMP inaction and suspect vested interests at play. “Are they waiting for a major health crisis?” questioned a resident.

In response, a BBMP official claimed they had previously issued notices to 27 illegal units and promised stringent action against repeat offenders.
