A late-night encounter between a Bengaluru policeman and two individuals has reignited the contentious Kannada language debate, spotlighting cultural integration in the city. Entrepreneur Vatsal Sanghvi shared his experience on X (formerly Twitter), alleging harassment that eased only after his friend addressed the policeman in Kannada.
Recounting the incident, Sanghvi said a hostile officer questioned their presence around 10:30 PM while they sat near Lavelle Road. “My friend responded in Kannada, asking on what grounds we were being questioned. The cop’s tone changed instantly—he apologized and let us be,” he wrote. While supporting learning the local language, Sanghvi criticized the discriminatory treatment, stating, “Harassment for not knowing Kannada is unacceptable.”
The Bengaluru Police promptly responded, requesting details of the location and contact information. Their reply acknowledged the situation, demonstrating awareness of public sensitivity toward such matters.
Sanghvi’s post drew mixed reactions. Some noted police vigilance in the area due to its reputation for nightlife activities, while others shared similar experiences of language-based discrimination in Bengaluru. The broader conversation highlighted complaints of differential treatment in auto fares and interactions depending on language proficiency.
This incident revives the debate on balancing cultural respect and inclusivity in a cosmopolitan city. As discussions continue, voices on both sides reflect a divide: some see Kannada fluency as essential to integration, while others view such demands as exclusionary in a diverse metropolis like Bengaluru.
