Bengaluru: The State Education Department has informed all government primary and secondary schools to observe a ‘bag-free’ day on one Saturday October 29 of every month under the Sambhrama Shanivara programme.

The Department of State Education Research and Training (DSERT) website has student activity materials and instructors’ guides linked to “Sambhrama Shanivara” that must be used, a circular from Samagra Shikshana Karnataka stated.

The aim of “Bag Free” Day is to promote civic consciousness in children by engaging them in a variety of activities that will help them become better citizens. By reducing the burden of textbooks, it is expected to create a joyful learning experience.

For ten different subjects, self-explanatory pictorial activity books for students have been prepared, together with teacher instruction manuals for implementing them in the classroom.

The project was initially declared in 2019. The Covid – 19 pandemic, however, put a halt to the implementation.
