The Karnataka High Court has taken a proactive step towards the preservation of the state’s cultural heritage. On Monday, a division bench consisting of Chief Justice NV Anjaria and Justice KV Arvind issued notices to both the central and state governments, requesting them to file objections regarding the safe relocation of two ancient temples—the Allama Prabhu Swamy Temple and the Vitthala Temple. These temples, which are approximately 250 years old, are currently submerged in the backwaters of the Hidal reservoir in Belagavi district and are in urgent need of preservation.

The initiative stems from a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Nikhil Vitthala Patil, a student from Kolhapur district in Maharashtra. Patil has passionately argued that these temples, as significant cultural, historical, and religious monuments, warrant immediate protection. He highlighted the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of Kannadigas for future generations.

In his petition, Patil made several proposals aimed at safeguarding these heritage sites. He requested the establishment of a special committee composed of archaeology experts to study and implement protective measures for the temples. Furthermore, he called for an investigation into officials who failed to submit reports concerning the survey of the Allama Prabhu Swamy Temple. Patil also suggested forming a joint committee to survey submerged heritage temples across Karnataka.

The court has adjourned the hearing until November 11, allowing the government entities time to respond to the notices. This development has ignited hope among heritage conservationists and the general public for the preservation of Karnataka’s rich cultural legacy.

As the court proceedings unfold, the focus remains on ensuring that these ancient temples receive the protection they deserve, safeguarding a vital part of Karnataka’s history for future generations.
