A security lapse at a paying guest (PG) accommodation in Marathahalli led to the theft of valuables after an intruder allegedly used a room key left on a common dashboard to access a resident’s room.

The incident was reported at New Nandi PG for Gents in Ashwathnagar on June 8.

Thief exploits common key storage practice

According to the complaint filed by Bantuboina Naveen, 30, he had locked Room No. 301 and stepped out with his roommates for tea around 6.30 pm.

As per a common practice followed by several inmates, the room key was left on a dashboard located on the ground floor for easy access by occupants.

Police said the unidentified suspect entered the PG premises, picked up the key from the dashboard and gained entry into the room without attracting attention.

Laptop, cash and documents stolen

The accused allegedly stole a laptop, charger, headphones, PAN card, credit cards and Rs 2,000 in cash before fleeing the premises.

The theft came to light when Naveen returned to the room and discovered that his belongings were missing.

A review of CCTV footage reportedly showed the suspect taking the key from the dashboard and entering the room before escaping with the valuables.

Police launch search operation

Based on the complaint, HAL Police registered a case under Section 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with theft in a dwelling house and similar premises.

Police said the PG in-charge was not present near the entrance at the time of the incident, allowing the accused to enter the building without being questioned.

Investigators are analysing CCTV footage and other evidence to identify and apprehend the suspect.
