Bengaluru: A 17-year-old youth was killed when he and his friends were attempting to take photos at a pond near Devanahalli on the outskirts of the city on Wednesday afternoon.
The police have identified the victim as Varshan, a first-year pre-university student and resident of Kamalanagar in the city. The police said the victim had gone to Nandi Hills with six of his friends on three motorcycles for an excursion. Around 3 p.m., the group made their way back to the city, but stopped by a small pond near Maleganahalli, which is on the Bengaluru-Hyderabad National Highway.
According to the police, they attempted to take pictures while standing close to the pond as well as take a dip to beat the heat. While taking pictures on the steep banks of the artificially-created pond, Varshan slipped and fell into the water.
“His friends did not know swimming. By the time they attempted to reach him, the boy had drowned,” said a police officer.
Vishwanathapura police have registered a case of unnatural death. The post-mortem was conducted late on Wednesday night.
