Bengaluru: The Karnataka Cabinet, on Wednesday, okayed the proposal to form the state’s 31st district- Vijayanagara.

The proposed new district will be carved out of the Ballari district, in the northern part of Karnataka, and many believe that the decision to form the district may put the Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa-led government in trouble.

Even when BSY agreed to the request of carving out the Vijayanagara district in 2019, it evoked a sense of resentment in Ballari.

The BJP stood divided because of the issue and BJP MLA representing Ballari, G Somashekara Reddy had then called the proposal ‘selfish’.

Protests were held under the leadership of Somashekar Reddy and Karunakara Reddy, the sons of mining baron and former minister Janardhan Reddy.

As per sources, five taluks- Ballari, Kurugodu, Siraguppa, Sandur and Kudligi – will be a part of the Ballari district, while Hosapete, Kampli, Hagaribommanahalli, Kottur, Hadagali and Harappanahalli will constitute the Vijayanagara district.

The Cabinet is likely to form boundary maps and confirm the new taluks in the next meeting.

The decision is said to transform into a major advantage for Minister Anand Singh, who has been campaigning for the new district.

It can be noted that Hampi, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, was once the capital of the glorious Viajayanagara empire.
