Bengaluru: The State Government constituted an independent panel on Saturday May 7, led by former Karnataka High Court judge Justice Dr. K. Bhakthavatsala, to investigate why backward classes were trailing behind politically in Panchayat Raj Institutions and Urban Local Bodies and submit a report.
According to sources, former IAS officer C. R. Chikkamath will be a member of the commission.
The decision to constitute the Commission came after deliberations at all-party meetings held by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on March 23 and 31, stated an order issued by the Backward Classes Welfare Department on Saturday.
According to the order, the Supreme Court directed the states to form an independent committee to investigate the issue of backward class political representation in local bodies in 2010.
