Bengaluru: The State Government on Monday March 21 amended the Karnataka Prisons Act of 1963 wherein imprisonment of three to five years will be rewarded to prisoners using mobile phones in the jail.

Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister J. C. Madhuswamy said that it was found that there was widespread usage of mobile phones, and other gadgets among many other offences. He stressed that the change in the law comes to bring a curb on such offences in the future.

Under Section 42 of the Act, the government through bill has added the words, mobile or any instrument of communication for which the punishment is not less than three years. Further, it may extend to five years and fine.

The amendment follows as a result of videos of such activities in the jail were circulated.
