A surprise inspection by the Karnataka Lokayukta at Food and Civil Supplies Department warehouses and Anna Bhagya distribution centres in Bengaluru has uncovered several irregularities, including stock mismatches, incomplete records, unaccounted cash and violations of transportation norms.
The inspection was carried out at facilities located in Shantinagar, Bommanahalli, Basavanagudi and Hanumanthanagar.
Stock discrepancies raise concerns
At the Shantinagar warehouse, Lokayukta officials found a mismatch between the quantity of rice recorded in official registers and the actual stock available on the premises.
Officials present at the warehouse reportedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the discrepancy.
In Bommanahalli, inspectors found incomplete records relating to rice stocks, with authorities unable to furnish accurate details regarding the quantity received and distributed.
Worker welfare lapses exposed
The inspection also revealed that several workers employed at the warehouses were not covered under insurance or welfare schemes.
Officials noted that one worker who had reportedly suffered injuries while on duty had not received compensation or assistance from the department.
The findings have raised concerns about compliance with labour welfare requirements at government-operated facilities.
Unaccounted cash and transport violations
At the Basavanagudi facility, Lokayukta officials found unaccounted cash amounting to ₹17,800 and ₹9,500 with two staff members. The employees were unable to explain the source of the money during the inspection.
Officials also discovered a rice transport vehicle carrying loads beyond its permitted capacity. Further checks revealed that the vehicle’s insurance, permit and registration documents had expired.
Anna Bhagya guidelines violated
The inspection team also identified violations of government guidelines governing the transport of Anna Bhagya rice.
Distribution vehicles were reportedly operating without mandatory markings and helpline details required under official regulations. Similar violations were found at facilities in Hanumanthanagar.
The Lokayukta is expected to submit its findings to the concerned authorities for further action and corrective measures. #Lokayukta #Bengaluru #AnnaBhagya #Karnataka #GovernmentAudit #newskarnataka
