A tense search operation is underway after a man leapt into the Lakshmana Theertha river from a bridge near the Hunsur town tahsildar’s office on Monday.

The individual has been identified as Purushottam, 45, a resident of Emmekoppalu village in Hunsur taluk. Moments before taking the drastic step, Purushottam reportedly called his elder brother, Ravi, informing him of his intention to end his life and requesting that he look after his children.

When authorities reached the bridge, they found Purushottam’s motorbike parked nearby. His mobile phone and slippers were also recovered from the spot, confirming he had jumped into the river.

Firefighters quickly launched a search operation to trace him in the flowing waters. Teams are combing the riverbanks and nearby stretches to locate any signs of him.

Hunsur Town Police have arrived on site and begun an investigation into the incident. While the reasons behind Purushottam’s decision remain unclear, officers are speaking with family members and locals to gather more details about his personal circumstances and mental state.

The incident has left the local community shocked and distressed. Authorities have urged anyone experiencing emotional distress to reach out to helplines or support networks for help instead of resorting to self-harm
