Man posing as fortune teller steals Rs 8 lakh gold in Bengaluru

Bengaluru police recently apprehended a 42-year-old man accused of stealing gold worth Rs 8 lakh from a homemaker by pretending to be a mendicant fortune teller. The crime occurred in March 2024 in Virat Nagar, Southeast Bengaluru. The suspect, BM Venkataramana, a resident of Gudemaranahalli village in Ramanagara, was arrested on January 10. Officers found him acting suspiciously in Bommanahalli, dressed as a fortune teller and carrying a rattle drum.

According to police, in March 2024, Venkataramana approached a 37-year-old woman, claiming he could predict her future. He tricked her into a “ritual,” asking her to place all the gold from her house and some rice into two earthen pots. While reciting mantras to distract her, he switched the pot containing the gold with another filled with rice. The woman realized the deception after he left and filed a report with the Bommanahalli police.

Despite initial investigations yielding no results, a breakthrough came during routine patrols on January 10 when officers spotted Venkataramana dressed as a fortune teller. Upon questioning, he confessed to the crime and revealed he had pawned the stolen gold at a finance shop in Chintamani. The stolen gold was recovered, and Venkataramana was remanded to judicial custody.
