Bengaluru: A shocking attempted murder incident was reported near Bengaluru after a man allegedly tried to slit his wife’s throat on a busy public road before local residents intervened and rescued her.

The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon at Dasanapura near Nelamangala on the outskirts of Bengaluru, creating panic among passersby and residents in the area.

Police identified the accused as Sanjay, a native of Bihar, while the victim has been identified as Sonali.

Woman rescued by alert bystanders

According to police and eyewitness accounts, Sanjay arrived near the victim’s residence on a motorcycle while wearing a helmet.

As Sonali stepped out of her house, he allegedly stopped her, dragged her onto the road and attempted to attack her with a knife in full public view.

Witnesses said the accused allegedly held the knife against her throat, triggering fear and chaos in the locality as people nearby realised the seriousness of the situation.

Before the attack could escalate further, several local residents rushed to the spot and overpowered the accused.

During the struggle, Sonali managed to free herself and move to safety.

The quick intervention by bystanders is believed to have prevented a potentially fatal incident.

Marital disputes suspected behind attack

Police said preliminary investigations suggest that the couple had been facing ongoing marital problems for several months.

According to officials, both Sanjay and Sonali were reportedly in their second marriage and had moved to Bengaluru hoping to begin a new phase in life together.

However, the relationship allegedly deteriorated because of frequent arguments and domestic disputes.

Investigators said the disputes were reportedly linked to Sanjay’s alcohol addiction and behavioural issues.

Sources familiar with the case said Sonali had recently refused to continue living with him following repeated quarrels and disagreements.

Police suspect this may have angered the accused and triggered the violent attack attempt.

Public attack creates panic

The incident shocked local residents because the alleged attack occurred openly on a busy road during daytime hours.

Eyewitnesses said several people initially struggled to understand what was happening before realising the woman was in danger.

Residents who intervened reportedly acted immediately after noticing the knife and hearing the victim’s cries for help.

The incident once again highlighted growing concerns regarding domestic violence and violent crimes occurring in public spaces.

Police begin investigation

Police have taken the accused into custody and launched a detailed investigation into the incident.

Officials are expected to record statements from eyewitnesses, the victim and local residents as part of the probe.

Authorities are also examining the couple’s background and the nature of their previous disputes.

Further legal action against the accused will be initiated based on the investigation findings.

Police have urged the public to immediately report cases involving domestic violence, threats or abusive behaviour to prevent such incidents from escalating into serious crimes.

Concerns over domestic violence rise

The case has sparked concern locally regarding domestic abuse and the dangers associated with unresolved family disputes.

Social activists and residents have praised the timely action of bystanders who intervened and potentially saved the woman’s life.

Experts often stress the importance of early intervention, counselling and legal support in cases involving repeated domestic conflict and substance abuse.

The investigation into the attempted murder case is currently ongoing.
