Kanakapura: A week-long mystery surrounding the disappearance of a 16-year-old girl ended on Saturday after Sathanur police exhumed her body from an agricultural farm in Karnataka’s Kanakapura. The shocking murder case came to light following an alleged drunken confession by the uncle of the accused minor boy at a local bar.
According to police, the victim and the 16-year-old accused, both from families of daily-wage labourers, had become friends through Instagram. The two reportedly eloped from Bengaluru last month and began living together in Sathanur, where they worked as daily-wage labourers.
Argument allegedly ended in accidental shooting
Police said the incident occurred on July 10 after the boy allegedly saw the girl talking to someone on her mobile phone. Suspecting her, an argument reportedly broke out between the two.
Investigators said the boy allegedly picked up a double-barrel gun belonging to his uncle and pointed it at the girl in an attempt to threaten her. During the confrontation, the firearm allegedly discharged accidentally, killing the teenager on the spot.
Fearing the consequences, the boy is suspected of burying the girl’s body near an agricultural field in Sathanur on the same day.
Drunken confession exposed the crime
The crime remained hidden for nearly a week until Friday, when the accused’s uncle allegedly disclosed details of the incident while intoxicated at a local bar. According to police, he reportedly told people present that his nephew had shot his live-in partner and buried her body in a nearby field.
Residents who overheard the conversation alerted the Sathanur police, prompting an immediate investigation.
Body exhumed, investigation underway
Police teams reached the agricultural farm on Saturday evening and exhumed the girl’s body in the presence of local authorities. The area has been secured for further forensic examination.
The accused minor has been taken into custody, and police have launched a detailed investigation to establish the exact sequence of events. Authorities are also examining the circumstances under which the firearm was accessed and whether any other individuals may have been involved in concealing the crime.
