A tragic incident in Bengaluru has raised fresh concerns over dowry-related harassment after a 3-month-old infant’s mother died by suicide. The woman’s family has alleged that she was subjected to continuous harassment by her husband and in-laws.
Family alleges harassment over dowry
According to the complaint filed by the victim’s brother, Narasimha Murthy, a resident of Bettadasapura, the woman had been facing pressure related to dowry demands after her marriage. The complaint names her husband, Vikram, and his family members.
The family has claimed that the harassment intensified in recent months, particularly after the birth of the couple’s child, leading to severe emotional distress.
Police register case, probe underway
Based on the complaint, police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act and other sections pertaining to cruelty and abetment of suicide. Officials confirmed that an investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident.
Authorities are also recording statements from family members and neighbours as part of the probe.

The incident has once again highlighted the persistent issue of dowry harassment in society. Despite strict laws, cases continue to emerge, pointing to the need for stronger awareness, enforcement, and community intervention.
