Murder accused attacks constable during spot mahajar; shot on leg

Bengaluru: A police constable was attacked by an murder accused during a spot mahajar in Jigani Industrial area on Sunday. However, the accused was shot in the leg by Bengaluru Rural police.

Deepak Kumar Jha(23), accused in a murder case was taken to the crime spot by a team of police, led by Inspector Mallesh attached to Jigani police station and two police constables on Sunday.

According to the police, Deepak, who hails from Bihar, and his two associates, both hailing from Nepal, had carried out random attacks on five people on Friday night at three different places in Jigani, in a bid to loot them. One of them died on the spot.

Based on credible information and the description provided by the victims, the police had arrested Deepak and his associate Santhosh Jafra from Bannerghatta on Saturday evening, while the third one is still on the run.

“Deepak was creating ruckus in the jail on Saturday night. He was quarreling with the policemen on duty. On Sunday, Inspector Mallesh along with the team had brought Deepak for Mahajar to the crime spot. In a bid to escape, he attacked a constable Muniappa by wrapping a chain around his neck. When Inspector Mallesh warned him, he came charging at him following which the inspector shot him below his knee to disarm him. Both, the police constable and the accused were rushed to Vijayshree hospital where they are being treated currently,” Ramesh told sources.

“Deepak is a notorious offender. His father had come to Jigani few years ago and had settled down. He was working as a labourer. We need to check his past records and verify as to how many cases have been pending against him,” Ramesh said. Jigani police have registered a case and begun investigation.
