Bengaluru: Once celebrated on the international stage for his unforgettable performance in the Oscar-nominated film Salaam Bombay!, National Award-winning actor Shafiq Syed now leads a modest life as an auto-rickshaw driver in Bengaluru, highlighting the uncertain journey of many child actors after early success.
Born and raised in Bengaluru’s slums, Shafiq was just 11 years old when he ran away to Mumbai with friends in search of a better life and a chance to see Bollywood. Living on the footpaths near Churchgate railway station, his fortunes changed after he was invited to attend an acting workshop that eventually led to his breakthrough role.
From Bengaluru’s streets to global recognition
After weeks of training, Shafiq was cast as Krishna (Chaipau), the lead character in filmmaker Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay! (1988). The critically acclaimed film, which portrayed the lives of street children in Mumbai, received an Academy Award nomination for Best International Feature Film and earned worldwide acclaim.
His powerful performance won him the National Film Award for Best Child Artist in 1989, making him one of the country’s most promising young actors.
Fame was short-lived
Despite his early success, opportunities in the film industry gradually disappeared. Shafiq later appeared in Patang (1994), directed by Goutam Ghose, but struggled to secure regular acting roles.
Returning to Bengaluru in 1993, he took up several jobs to support himself and his family. Over the years, he worked as an auto-rickshaw driver, a lighting assistant on film sets and later behind the scenes in Kannada television production.
A story of resilience
Today, Shafiq lives in Bengaluru with his family and continues to work hard to make ends meet. His remarkable journey—from a child actor who received international recognition to an ordinary working man—has once again drawn public attention, reminding many of the challenges faced by artists after the spotlight fades.
His life remains a powerful story of resilience, perseverance and the unpredictable nature of fame.
