Bengaluru: The recently unveiled 080 Lounge at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) Terminal 2 stands as a testament to Bengaluru’s unique character and Karnataka’s cultural richness. Designed to reflect the terminal’s core philosophy ,sustainability, technology, art and culture, and a terminal in a garden-this lounge is more than just a transit space; it’s an immersive experience celebrating the city and state’s heritage.
An Artistic Welcome
Upon entering the 080 Lounge, visitors are greeted by an array of local art that captures the essence of Bengaluru and Karnataka. This inclusion of local artists’ work is part of a broader effort to infuse the terminal with a genuine sense of place. The lounge aims to provide more than just comfort; it strives to offer an “airport adventure,” as described by a KIA spokesperson.
Pravat Paikray, Vice President of Commercial Development at Bangalore International Airport Limited, emphasises that the lounge is designed to showcase Karnataka’s rich heritage while incorporating modern sophistication. “Each corner has a story to tell,” he notes, highlighting the thoughtful integration of cultural elements throughout the space.
A Taste of Karnataka
A central feature of the lounge is Kodagu Cafe, which offers a sensory journey through the aromas of freshly brewed coffee from Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, and Sakleshpura. The cafe’s design pays homage to Kodagu’s renowned honey, with lampshades crafted to resemble honeycombs and a ceiling made up of 5,000 jigsaw-like pieces, reflecting traditional Kodagu architecture.
Relaxation and Business Facilities
Adjacent to the cafe, Oasis Lounge provides a relaxing environment with a floor map of Bengaluru, inviting travellers to unwind before their flight. The space is designed to offer a tranquil retreat amidst the bustling airport environment. For those needing to stay productive, ‘Business Connect’ offers individual cubicles, catering to the needs of on-the-go professionals.
Culinary and Cultural Experiences
Radio House, a gastropub located in the lounge, celebrates Bengaluru’s vibrant live music and pub culture. The venue features stylish artwork by local artists and contributes to the dynamic atmosphere of the lounge. At the end of the lounge, a striking abstract art installation named ‘The Flight’ captures the essence of aviation with chrome-plated flight paths set against a textured orange backdrop.
In the centre of the lounge, visitors will find ‘Music Tree,’ a sculpture crafted from lantana wood by tribal communities from the Nilgiris. This piece serves as a tribute to traditional craftsmanship and adds a natural element to the lounge’s modern aesthetic.
A Destination Beyond Transit
According to George Bennet Kuruvilla, CEO of Bangalore Airport Services Limited, the goal was to create a terminal that is not just a place to pass through but a destination in its own right. The garden dining area is particularly noteworthy, reflecting Bengaluru’s ‘Garden City’ reputation. The menu here, curated by celebrated chefs Abhijit Saha and Ranveer Brar, changes monthly, offering a dynamic culinary experience for passengers.
