Newtrace Pioneering Green Hydrogen In India

BENGALURU: Green hydrogen, hailed as the fuel of the future, is gaining traction globally, and India is keen to keep pace with this shift towards alternative fuels. Green hydrogen is produced using renewable energy sources through electrolysis, splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen without a carbon footprint.

India’s commitment to green hydrogen is evident with the approval of the National Green Hydrogen Mission in 2023, aiming to produce 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) annually by 2030. Bengaluru-based startup Newtrace is making waves in this sector with its innovative electrolyser technology.

Founded in 2021 by Prasanta Sarkar and Rochan Sinha, Newtrace has developed a membrane-less electrolyser technology that promises nearly 99.9% pure hydrogen at a significantly reduced cost. Their technology could become a major player in India’s green hydrogen market and the global scene.

Newtrace’s journey began in 2020 when Sarkar and Sinha, both PhD scholars, pivoted from software to green hydrogen technology. By the end of 2021, they had moved to IIT Madras and developed their first electrolyser, MARK 1. Since then, they have introduced three versions, with MARK 4 already in use by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL).

The startup’s technology addresses the high costs associated with traditional electrolysers, offering a more affordable solution. Newtrace plans to expand its production capacity and explore international markets, particularly in the Middle East and Japan.

Newtrace has raised $5.65 million in Seed funding and secured orders worth $300,000. The startup is also a beneficiary of the Indian government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) for electrolyser manufacturing.

As Newtrace scales up and faces challenges like deployment timelines and competition, its advancements in green hydrogen technology could play a crucial role in India’s ambition to lead in this sector.
