A Bengaluru resident’s heartfelt social media post about his interaction with a plumber from Odisha has gone viral, earning widespread admiration for the worker’s professionalism and effort to learn Kannada.
The user, posting on X (formerly Twitter), described how the plumber, who was booked via Urban Company, impressed him by being punctual and courteous, and by making an effort to converse in basic Kannada. The plumber revealed that he had been working in Bengaluru for the past two years and was still learning the local language to better connect with residents.
“He was on time and very professional. I’ve seen such behaviour often in workers from Odisha,” the user wrote, sparking an outpouring of similar experiences.
One user replied, “Odisha people are nice. Probably my favourite after Kannadigas,” while another mentioned how Odia staff at a resort had picked up Kannada fluently in just over two years.
Many others echoed the sentiment, praising migrant workers who strive to integrate into Karnataka’s cultural and linguistic ecosystem, particularly in the service industry. One Bengaluru resident shared that their Odia plumber, living in the city for over 15 years, spoke fluent Kannada, making it hard to tell he wasn’t a local.
The post resonated at a time when tensions around language and migrant integration have been rising, with some locals voicing concern over newcomers not adopting Kannada.
This instance, however, served as a refreshing reminder of mutual respect and cultural harmony.
