Bengaluru: A 31-year-old man allegedly killed his wife following a domestic dispute and later died by suicide at their rented accommodation on the outskirts of Bengaluru, police said on Monday.

The incident was reported from Heilalig village, under the jurisdiction of the local police station. The deceased have been identified as Deepantha Sabara (31) and his wife Manjula Sabara (27), both natives of Odisha.

According to police, the couple had moved into the rented house around 20 days ago. They were employed at a private company in Bommasandra town and had recently relocated to the area in search of work opportunities.

Argument escalated into violence

Preliminary investigation suggests that the couple had an argument over domestic issues, which allegedly escalated into violence. Officials suspect that Deepantha assaulted his wife in a fit of rage, reportedly thrashing and punching her, leading to her death.

Police believe that after the alleged assault, Deepantha died by suicide by hanging himself inside the same house.

The case came to light on February 26 after the house owner, Shivakumar, was alerted by his mother. She had gone to check on the tenants after noticing that the house remained locked for an unusually long period.

Upon peering inside, she reportedly saw Manjula lying motionless on a couch. The police were immediately informed.

Selfie video and suicide note recovered

During the spot inspection, officers recovered a mobile phone containing a selfie video allegedly recorded by Deepantha. In the video, he is reportedly seen crying in front of his wife’s body.

A suicide note written in Odia was also found at the scene. Police said the contents of the note are being translated and examined as part of the investigation.

Officials noted that the bodies were found in a decomposed state, indicating that the deaths had occurred nearly two days before discovery.

The bodies were shifted to a government hospital for post-mortem examination. Following the autopsy, they were handed over to the family members for last rites.

Investigation under way

A case has been registered, and further investigation is ongoing to ascertain the exact sequence of events and confirm the cause of death based on forensic and medical reports.

Police are also verifying the couple’s background, employment details and whether there had been prior complaints or indications of domestic discord.

The incident has shocked residents of the locality, particularly as the couple had moved into the neighbourhood only a few weeks ago. Neighbours said they had limited interaction with the couple and were unaware of any ongoing disputes.

Conclusion

As investigators continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the tragic deaths, authorities have reiterated the need for early intervention and counselling in cases of domestic conflict. The case serves as a grim reminder of how unresolved disputes can spiral into irreversible consequences.
