Heavy rainfall on June 2 once again submerged key stretches of Bengaluru’s Outer Ring Road (ORR), leading to severe traffic congestion and long delays for thousands of commuters. The recurring flooding has prompted the Outer Ring Road Companies Association (ORRCA) to call for urgent and long-term infrastructure reforms.
Areas including Panathur, Balagere and Varthur were among the worst affected as waterlogging disrupted traffic movement and impacted daily commuters travelling through one of Bengaluru’s busiest technology corridors.
Flooding remains a recurring problem
While the immediate cause was intense pre-monsoon rainfall, ORRCA said the larger problem lies in inadequate stormwater infrastructure and poor maintenance.
According to the association, clogged drains filled with silt, plastic waste and construction debris continue to restrict water flow during heavy showers. The resulting water accumulation repeatedly paralyses traffic and creates difficulties for residents, office-goers and businesses operating along the corridor.
Industry body seeks corridor-wide overhaul
ORRCA has urged authorities to move beyond temporary measures and undertake a comprehensive drainage upgrade across the entire Outer Ring Road stretch.
The association stressed that piecemeal repairs have failed to address the root causes of flooding. It has recommended systematic desilting of drains, better coordination among civic agencies and regular monitoring of vulnerable locations.
Industry representatives argue that the ORR corridor is a critical economic hub housing numerous technology firms and business establishments, making uninterrupted connectivity essential for the city’s growth.
Demand for real-time response system
Apart from infrastructure improvements, ORRCA has also sought the creation of a real-time flood response mechanism. Such a system would help authorities quickly identify waterlogging hotspots, deploy emergency teams and provide timely updates to commuters.
The association believes that a combination of improved drainage infrastructure and proactive monitoring can significantly reduce disruption during future monsoon spells.
