Bengaluru: Animal welfare activists have demanded the immediate arrest of an autorickshaw driver accused of brutally beating a one-month-old stray puppy to death in Bengaluru’s KR Puram. The incident has sparked widespread outrage among animal lovers, who are calling for strict action against the accused.
Puppy allegedly killed with wooden log
According to activists, the incident occurred on the night of July 25, when the accused, identified as Poul Raj, allegedly struck the puppy with a heavy wooden log, killing it on the spot.
The accused reportedly claimed that the puppy had bitten the seat of his autorickshaw. However, activists disputed the claim, stating that the puppy was barely a month old and too small to even climb into the vehicle.
They said the litter of puppies was being kept in a barricaded area and that one of them had accidentally wandered outside before the alleged assault took place.
Incident captured by local resident
The alleged assault was witnessed by a local resident, Princy, who recorded the aftermath of the incident on her mobile phone.
According to activists, the video shows the accused remaining unmoved even after the puppy had died. The footage has strengthened calls for immediate legal action against him.
Following the complaint, KR Puram Police registered an FIR in connection with the incident. The puppy’s body was sent for a postmortem examination to establish the cause of death.
Activists seek strict legal action
Animal welfare groups have urged the police to arrest the accused without delay and ensure that the case is investigated thoroughly. They said acts of cruelty against animals must be dealt with firmly to discourage similar incidents in the future.
Police said the investigation is underway, and further action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry and the postmortem report.
