The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has announced plans to introduce pedal boating in 10 lakes across the city as part of an initiative to promote tourism and generate funds for lake maintenance.

Officials clarified that only non-motorised pedal boats will be permitted, as motorised boats are considered harmful to the fragile lake ecosystems.

Lakes identified for boating

The lakes shortlisted for the initial phase include Ulsoor, Kaggadasapura, Nayandahalli, Sankey, Yelahanka, Rachenahalli, Vengaiah, Rampura, Begur and Madiwala.

A senior GBA official stated that the tourism department will implement the project in collaboration with the Karnataka Tank Conservation and Development Authority.

“One of the main objectives is to generate revenue for maintenance and infrastructure expenses of lakes,” the official said.

Focus on sustainability and revenue

Authorities emphasised that environmental protection remains a priority. By opting for pedal boats, the GBA aims to balance recreational activities with ecological preservation.

If the initiative receives a positive response from residents and visitors, the boating facility could be expanded to nearly 100 lakes in the future.

The move is expected to enhance public engagement with city lakes while creating a sustainable revenue model to support their upkeep and conservation.
