Bengaluru: Next in line of the BBMP’s pro-women and women safety projects, comes the “pink auto rickshaws.” That’s right! Women and children can now ply in special rickshaws (painted pink for easy distinction), which will be driven by either male or female drivers.
According to Bengaluru Mayor Sampath Raj, around 20 percent of the auto rickshaws distributed under the social welfare scheme of the BBMP will be reserved for women.
He also said that the rickshaws would start operating from January adding that it was a pilot phase. In order to motivate more people to ply the pink rickshaws, there will a subsidy of up to Rs 25000 offered on purchase, the mayor added.
Feeling enthused after the positive response received for the parking reservation initiative, the mayor said that the BBMP was currently in the process of holding talks with various companies looking to take on the task of running these autos as a CSR programme.
The rickshaws will have the same design as all other rickshaws, save for the fact that they will be painted pink for easy identification.
