Bengaluru: Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Sunday February 6 said that the Home Department has been instructed to teach self-defence training to women through police training schools.

Speaking at the launch of the Social Welfare Department’s “Obavva Art of Self-Defense Training,” he said that self-defence training would soon be given to girl students in schools and universities, and police training schools will help to impart it.

“Women enjoy a high level of respect and position in society, but perverts cheaply look at them. To prevent harassment and atrocities against women, several laws have been established, programmes have been developed, and funds have been spent. However, there is a need to provide them with self-defence training as well. Women who are trained in self-defence could teach rouge elements a lesson,” said CM Bommai.

He mentioned that an ambitious plan is in the process to give self-defence training to 50,000 girls in hostels run by the Backward Classes and Social Welfare Department. It was named after Onake Obavva, who gives strength to fight, he added.

The State Government has decided to induct 7,500 additional NCC cadets each year with an allocation of Rs. 1,200 per cadet, with 75 additional NCC units will be started in schools and colleges. By 2023, the number of NCC Cadets in the State will increase to above 50,000.

“A special programme is being developed to provide women with self-defence training on par with military training,” he added.
