Bengaluru: A 32-year-old woman from Kerala died after falling from a two-wheeler and being run over by a goods vehicle near Hebbagodi on Wednesday, with local residents blaming the poor condition of the road for the accident.
The victim, identified as Medha, was travelling pillion with a friend when the incident occurred. She was reportedly working at a provident fund office in Bengaluru.
Woman thrown onto road after bike loses control
According to preliminary information, the two-wheeler lost control after a car travelling ahead suddenly applied the brakes, reportedly because of the poor road condition.
Medha was thrown onto the road following the incident. A goods vehicle travelling behind the two-wheeler then ran over her, killing her on the spot.
The accident has triggered concerns among residents over the condition of roads in and around Electronic City and Ananthnagar.
Residents protest, demand road repairs
Following the incident, local residents staged a road blockade and demanded immediate repairs to the damaged roads.
Residents alleged that several stretches in the area are riddled with potholes, posing a serious risk to motorists. One resident claimed that roads are frequently dug up for various works but are not properly restored afterwards.
The incident has once again brought attention to concerns over road safety and the need for timely maintenance of roads in Bengaluru’s rapidly developing areas.
Minister responds to concerns
Karnataka Minister Santosh Lad expressed sadness over the woman’s death and conveyed his sympathies to her family.
Responding to concerns over potholes, Lad said that the presence of a pothole should not be taken to mean that the “entire infrastructure is poor”. He also said the government had spent substantial amounts on infrastructure and provided the necessary justification every year.
The incident has renewed calls from residents for safer roads and prompt action on pothole-related hazards.
