Bengaluru: Officials of the Karnataka Forest Department, in coordination with the Kamakshipalya Police, have uncovered the alleged illegal possession of pythons at an apartment in west Bengaluru following complaints from local residents.
The joint operation was launched after residents reported suspicious activities and frequent visits by unknown persons to one of the flats, raising concerns about possible illegal activities.
Raid leads to rescue of pythons
Acting on the complaints, Forest Department officials conducted a raid at the apartment and allegedly discovered several pythons being kept without the mandatory permissions required under the Wildlife (Protection) Act.
According to officials, the reptiles were found concealed inside ordinary cardboard boxes in unsafe conditions within the residential flat.
The rescued pythons were immediately taken into the custody of the Forest Department for proper care and further examination.
Occupant detained for questioning
Following the discovery, Forest Department officials informed the Kamakshipalya Police, who joined the operation and detained the occupant of the flat for questioning.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the occupant is a native of Andhra Pradesh. Police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act and other applicable laws.
Probe into possible wildlife trafficking
Officials are investigating whether the accused has links to an organised wildlife trafficking network. Investigators are also trying to determine where the pythons were sourced from and the purpose for which they were allegedly being kept inside the apartment.
The Forest Department and police are continuing their investigation, and further legal action will be taken based on the findings.
Authorities have urged the public to report suspected cases of illegal wildlife possession or trafficking, emphasising that the protection of wildlife is a shared responsibility.
