Bengaluru: V K Sasikala, the jailed confidante of the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has recently shown interest in learning the Kannada language and if sources are to be trusted, she will soon enroll herself for a one year distant education course offered by Bangalore University’s Directorate of Correspondence course.

Presently, she is in Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, serving a four year term in disproportionate assets case.

There have also been reports of Bangalore University representatives visiting the jail premises to encourage the inmates to sign up for the courses they provided. After one of the visits, Sasikala expressed her interest in learning the language and spoke to one of the teachers posted in the prison who then informed his seniors. The word finally reached Professor B C Mylarappa, the Director of Bangalore University Distance Education.

Nearly all of the 260 candidates of the central jail intend to apply for the various under-graduate and post-graduate courses and programmes.

Mylarappa stated that their faculty would begin conducting classes in the jail premises and for distance education courses, there will be two-term classes of 15 to 20 days each.

He also stated that that the university would provide the study material and that it was exploring the idea of setting up an examination centre inside the prison premises as the admission requests by inmates have already crossed 200 in number.
