A gearless scooter was gutted in a fire after a speeding multi-utility vehicle (MUV) rammed into it and dragged it for over 100 metres on Jayamahal Main Road in RT Nagar on Saturday night, police said.

The rider, identified as Roopa, a resident of Sanjaynagar, sustained minor injuries in the accident and was taken to hospital for treatment.

CCTV captures dramatic accident

According to police, the incident was captured on a nearby CCTV camera which showed the MUV rear-ending the scooter from behind.

Following the impact, the scooter fell onto its left side and became lodged under the front-left wheel of the vehicle. The MUV continued moving for nearly 100 metres while dragging the scooter along the road.

During the drag, petrol reportedly leaked from the damaged fuel tank of the scooter.

Scooter bursts into flames

Police said the leaked fuel triggered an accidental fire while the scooter was being dragged. The vehicle was eventually engulfed in flames and suffered extensive damage.

Fortunately, the rider escaped with minor injuries and was quickly taken to hospital for medical attention.

Driver flees scene

Officials from the RT Nagar Traffic Police said the driver of the MUV fled the scene immediately after the accident.

Police are currently examining CCTV footage and other evidence to identify the vehicle and trace the driver involved in the incident.

Authorities have launched a search operation and further investigation is underway.
