A 38-year-old scrap worker has been arrested by Parappana Agrahara police for allegedly stealing UPS batteries from roadside power backup units, disrupting key public infrastructure in parts of Bengaluru.
Theft targeted critical infrastructure
The accused, identified as Chinnadurai, a native of Tamil Nadu, was apprehended on March 9 from a scrap shop in Vaddarapalya on Koppa Begur Main Road following a tip-off.
Police said he specifically targeted roadside power backup units installed for CCTV cameras, streetlights, and traffic signals. The thefts were reported mainly in Electronic City Phase-2 and along Shanthipura Main Road, affecting the functioning of essential services.
Case registered after multiple thefts
The case came to light on February 5 after a private company lodged a complaint regarding the theft of 10 UPS batteries from roadside installations. The repeated incidents had caused several traffic signals to become non-functional, raising safety concerns among commuters.
Confession and recovery
During interrogation, Chinnadurai allegedly confessed to committing the thefts as a means of livelihood. He also admitted to involvement in similar offences across different parts of the city.
Police recovered 51 UPS batteries belonging to various companies, along with an autorickshaw used in carrying out the crimes. The total value of the seized property is estimated at ₹4 lakh.
Multiple cases solved
Officials stated that with this arrest, not only has the current case been cracked, but two additional theft cases registered in other police stations have also been solved.
Accused remanded
The accused was produced before a court on March 10 and has been remanded to judicial custody. Police have indicated that further investigation is underway to determine if more cases are linked to the accused.
Public safety concerns highlighted
The incidents had disrupted traffic signals in key areas like Electronic City, posing risks to motorists and pedestrians. Authorities have reiterated the importance of safeguarding public infrastructure and urged citizens to report suspicious activities.
