On Tuesday, Bengaluru experienced severe thunderstorms, resulting in significant flooding at the Phoenix Mall of Asia located in the Yelahanka area. Viral videos on social media showcased extensive waterlogging, affecting the entire parking area and the mall’s entrance, making access challenging for customers.
The Phoenix Mall of Asia, one of the largest malls in Bengaluru, has faced scrutiny since its inauguration in 2023 due to repeated incidents of flooding, raising concerns about its location. In addition to the current flooding, the mall had previously been ordered to close for 15 days by Bengaluru police due to traffic congestion it caused in the surrounding area.
The mall management is actively working to drain the water and restore access to the premises.
In light of the ongoing heavy rainfall, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘orange’ alert for Bengaluru, forecasting continued adverse weather conditions. As a precaution, all aided and private schools, as well as Anganwadi centres in the city, will remain closed today, October 16, 2024. Public schools are already on holiday for Dussehra.
The civic body, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), has established 24/7 control rooms in all eight zones and launched a helpline number (1533) to address rain-related issues, underscoring the city’s proactive approach to managing the situation.
