Sewage Overflow Forces Indiranagar Restaurants to Shut

Two restaurants on Indiranagar’s 12th Main Road were sealed on Monday after their blocked sewage systems overflowed, contaminating sumps and forcing neighboring residents to vacate their homes temporarily. The overflow affected two adjacent houses, contaminating 6,000 liters of drinking water stored in their sumps on Sunday evening.

BBMP and BWSSB officials inspected the site and determined that the restaurants’ internal sewage lines were severely clogged, causing the backflow. The BBMP sealed the establishments and issued a 24-hour deadline to repair their drainage systems. Legal action will follow if the issue is not resolved.

Bhagyalakshmi, BBMP health inspector for the east zone, stated, “We’ve locked the restaurants and directed them to fix the drainage issue immediately. Additionally, inspections of all commercial establishments in the area will ensure adherence to trade license rules.”

BWSSB also issued notices to 22 other establishments in the area, mandating the installation of grease and waste traps to prevent similar incidents.

Venkatesh V, a resident whose sump was contaminated, expressed frustration, stating, “These restaurants have caused repeated trouble. While they’ve promised to clean our sumps within a day, BBMP should have acted earlier as we had complained multiple times.”

The incident underscores the need for stricter monitoring of commercial establishments to prevent public health hazards.
