Bengaluru: In a major push to strengthen public education, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced eight key “guarantees” aimed at transforming government schools across the state.
The comprehensive plan focuses on improving infrastructure, teaching quality, and overall learning outcomes in government primary schools, high schools, and pre-university colleges. The reforms are set to be implemented from the 2026–27 academic year and are expected to benefit over 50 lakh students.
Focus on teacher recruitment and infrastructure
A key component of the initiative is addressing the shortage of teachers through expedited recruitment processes. The government plans to ensure that all schools are adequately staffed to maintain quality education standards.
Alongside this, every school will be equipped with proper infrastructure, including well-designed buildings, sufficient classrooms based on student strength, clean drinking water, and functional toilet facilities. The move aims to create a more conducive learning environment for students across urban and rural areas.
Choice of medium and free transport
The government has also announced that students and parents will have the flexibility to choose their preferred medium of instruction. This step is expected to improve accessibility and cater to diverse linguistic needs.
Additionally, free transport facilities will be provided for students attending Karnataka Public Schools, especially those travelling from nearby villages and wards. This is likely to benefit students in rural and semi-urban regions who often face challenges in reaching schools.
Push for digital and holistic education
Recognising the importance of modern education, the government will prioritise digital learning across all institutions. Plans include setting up smart classrooms and integrating technology into the teaching process.
Equal emphasis will also be placed on extracurricular development, with art and sports activities being actively promoted in schools. This holistic approach aims to nurture well-rounded individuals rather than focusing solely on academics.
Monitoring and skill development
To ensure consistent quality, separate monitoring committees will be established to regularly review academic standards and school performance.
In addition, the government plans to introduce skill-based training at the school level, preparing students for future employment opportunities. This initiative aligns with the growing need for practical and vocational skills in today’s job market.
Strong academic performance highlighted
Sharing the announcement on social media platform X, the Chief Minister pointed to the state’s recent academic achievements. Karnataka recorded a 94.1 per cent pass rate in SSLC examinations and 86.48 per cent in pre-university exams.
He noted that students from government schools performed particularly well, indicating the strength and potential of the public education system.
Vision for the future
Siddaramaiah expressed confidence that these reforms will significantly enhance the quality of government education and attract more students to public institutions. He stated that the government aims to build the best school education system in the country within the next five years.
The Chief Minister also appealed to parents and students to consider enrolling in government schools and be part of the transformation.
Conclusion
The announcement of eight guarantees marks a significant step towards strengthening Karnataka’s public education system. With a focus on infrastructure, inclusivity, technology, and skill development, the initiative seeks to create a robust and future-ready learning ecosystem for millions of students.
If implemented effectively, these reforms could redefine the perception and performance of government schools in the state.
