Siddaramaiah to declare ‘luxury watch’ as state asset?

Bengaluru: An expensive wristwatch Chief Minister Siddaramaiah purportedly used to wear will soon be declared as a state property. According to sources, the Chief Minister has decided to hand over the expensive watch as a state asset. He is expected to make a formal announcement to this effect shortly.

According to the Opposition the watch is worth Rs 70 lakh. Sources said that, the Chief Minister did not know the cost of the wristwatch at the time of receiving it, and realised it was so expensive only after JD(S) president HD Kumaraswamy publicly claimed that the watch worn by the CM was around Rs 70 lakh.

If the Chief Minister declares it as state asset, he will be joining his predecessors like former Chief Minister, S. Nijalingappa, S.M. Krishna, who have handed over the expensive gifts received during their tenure, as state assets and which are now displayed in the Cabinet Hall.

The watch issue which became a talking point across the state had reached Raj Bhavan, with an RTI activist seeking Governor Vaju Vala’s sanction to investigate the issue and ascertain whether Siddaramaiah received the watch in violation of law. The state BJP too had written a letter to the Enforcement Directorate seeking a probe into the expensive gift presented to the CM.

Congress senior leader, B Janardhan Poojary had suggested that the CM auction the watch and donate that money to families of the Siachen victims. The issue also left the Congress high command redfaced.
