Commuting through one of Bengaluru’s busiest junctions is set to become more seamless, as the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation has initiated plans for an elevated pedestrian walkway at Silk Board.

Elevated walkway to link key metro lines

The proposed 250-metre-long elevated walkway will connect the operational Yellow Line, running between Bommasandra and RV Road, with the upcoming Blue Line along the Outer Ring Road. This link is expected to significantly improve passenger movement at Silk Board, which currently lacks a direct interchange between the two lines.

Unlike major interchange hubs such as Majestic and MG Road, commuters at Silk Board will rely on this dedicated walkway to switch between lines efficiently.

First travelator in Namma Metro network

A major highlight of the project is the introduction of a travelator—marking the first time such a सुविधा will be implemented in the Namma Metro network.

Commonly seen in airports, travelators are slow-moving walkways designed to help commuters cover long distances with ease. This addition is expected to benefit daily passengers navigating the high-footfall junction.

Project cost, timeline and tender details

The project is estimated to cost approximately ₹59 crore and will include civil construction, structural works, and architectural finishing. BMRCL floated the tender on April 5, inviting bids for the project, with submissions due by May 5. The earnest money deposit (EMD) has been fixed at ₹58 lakh.

Once the contract is awarded, construction is expected to be completed within nine months.

Land acquisition and execution plans underway

Officials confirmed that land acquisition for the project is currently in progress. Following the tender process, it may take one to two months to finalise the contractor before work begins.

Detailed technical specifications are yet to be finalised, but authorities have indicated that the project will prioritise both functionality and commuter comfort.

Boost to Bengaluru’s growing metro connectivity

The upcoming Blue Line station at Silk Board is expected to be ready by December 2026 and will eventually connect to Kempegowda International Airport by 2027.

Once completed, the elevated walkway will play a crucial role in easing congestion and enhancing last-mile connectivity at one of the city’s busiest transit points.

The initiative reflects Bengaluru’s continued push towards improving urban mobility infrastructure and ensuring a smoother commuting experience for thousands of daily passengers.
