Bengaluru: A speeding car rammed into a pedestrian near a mall in Sahakara Nagar late on Wednesday night, causing panic among bystanders and raising concerns over rash and drunk driving during the New Year period. The incident occurred close to the Mall of Asia around 10 pm on New Year’s Eve, when the driver of the car allegedly lost control of the vehicle, mounted the pavement and struck a young woman. She sustained minor injuries, while several other pedestrians narrowly escaped.

According to police, the driver is suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. He is currently being questioned as part of the investigation. A case has been registered at the nearest police station, and further inquiry is underway to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the mishap.

CCTV footage reveals sudden swerve

CCTV footage of the incident, which has since surfaced, shows the car suddenly veering off the road towards the pavement without any apparent warning. The vehicle is seen crashing into roadside guardrails before hitting the pedestrian, who was walking along the pavement.

The visuals indicate that the driver may have lost complete control of the car, resulting in a sharp and unanticipated left turn. The speed of the vehicle and the manner in which it mounted the pavement suggest reckless driving, police said.

The footage has become a crucial piece of evidence in the case and is being closely examined by investigators to assess whether overspeeding, intoxication, or any mechanical failure contributed to the accident.

Pedestrian escapes with minor injuries

Despite the severity of the impact captured on camera, the injured woman was fortunate to escape with only minor injuries. She was immediately assisted by onlookers, who rushed to her aid moments after the car came to a halt.

Police said the woman received prompt medical attention and is now out of danger. Four other pedestrians who were present on the pavement at the time also managed to escape unhurt, avoiding what could have been a far more serious tragedy.

Eyewitnesses said the incident happened so suddenly that people had little time to react. “The car just came out of nowhere and hit the railing before striking the girl. It was terrifying,” said a shop employee from the nearby area.

Driver questioned, probe underway

The driver of the car was detained at the spot and later taken in for questioning. Police officials said preliminary checks suggest that he may have been driving under the influence of alcohol, though confirmation will depend on medical and forensic reports.

Investigators are questioning the driver about the circumstances under which the vehicle swerved sharply to the left and mounted the pavement. They are also checking whether the driver violated speed limits or traffic regulations.

Police said charges will be framed based on the outcome of the investigation, including reports on intoxication, CCTV analysis, and witness statements.

New Year road safety concerns

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over road safety, particularly during festive periods such as New Year’s Eve, when cases of drunk and rash driving tend to rise sharply. Despite heightened police presence and enforcement drives across the city, accidents involving overspeeding and alcohol consumption continue to be reported.

Traffic police officials have repeatedly urged motorists to avoid drinking and driving and to strictly adhere to speed limits, especially in crowded areas with heavy pedestrian movement. “Such incidents show how a moment of negligence can put innocent lives at risk,” a senior police officer said.

Conclusion

While the absence of serious injuries in this incident has brought some relief, the accident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by reckless and drunken driving. With CCTV footage clearly capturing the sequence of events, police are expected to take stringent action based on the findings of the investigation. Authorities have reiterated the need for responsible driving, particularly during celebrations, to ensure that public spaces remain safe for pedestrians.
