Bengaluru: The department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Jain University – Center for Management Studies has organised an event, “Freedom for Life”, a street play to raise awareness for the upliftment of the society. The street plays touched upon various social issues faced by the people mostly living in the metro cities. This is an initiative undertaken annually by the department and this year the topics covered issues like Gender Inequality- From the perspective of the transgender community and Suicide: A Crime of heart.
The plays were performed at Cubbon park, Brigade Road and Jinke park (Chamarajpet) on October 23, 2016. A duration of one hour were given at each venue for the performances. The performance conveyed messages and solutions for the society to curb these problems to which the gathered crowd cheerfully applauded. The public felt that the message had great relevance as the problems discussed in the plays are a hindrance to the development of the nation.
“This initiative taken by the students on Gender Inequality and Suicide is going to throw lights on what happens with the society. The street play portrays how such issues can be handled in a very sensitive way” says Prof Dinesh Nilkant, Director, CMS- Jain University.
Speaking for the same cause Prof. Madhavan, Head of Media Studies said “Laws and punishment don’t necessarily always communicate sensible social change. What needs to be done is to address specific issues, particularly those with gender and respecting people who differ from each other and understand why people circum to pressure. The communication department of Jain University does it over and over again because these are timeless values that are the heart of communications program”
