According to the growers, the rate for a quintal of onion was Rs.20,000 till December 7, but it came down to Rs.12,000 on Sunday. As the growers continued their verbal dual, the onion procurement was stopped for over 2 hours both in Hubballi and Vijayapura APMCs.

A similar trend was reported even from Raichur AMPC. The farmers are now planning to sell onion in Maharastra market where a quintal of onion is fetching a minimum of Rs.20,000 per quintal and a maximum up to Rs.25,000.

The onion rate touched a historic high of Rs.200 in the retail market on Sunday. A kg of onion was sold at Rs.200 in Karwar and there were hardly any takers.

According to the sellers, the onion imported from Egypt has no takers. In the Hubballi APMC market, 15 tons of Egypt onion are lying without no takers.
