Bengaluru: Dr Sudha Yadav, a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Lok Sabha member, has been appointed the new Governor of Karnataka. The appointment was announced by President Droupadi Murmu on Monday, October 12, 2026, as part of a reshuffle involving gubernatorial positions in six states.
Yadav will succeed Thaawarchand Gehlot and become the second woman to hold the office of Karnataka Governor, after V S Ramadevi, who served from 1999 to 2002. Her appointment marks a new chapter in a public career spanning parliamentary politics and organisational responsibilities within the BJP.
Born on October 16, 1965, in Motla Kalan village in Haryana’s Rewari district, Yadav has an academic background in science. She pursued postgraduate studies in science and earned a doctorate in Chemistry before entering public life.
Her journey into politics followed a personal tragedy during the Kargil War in 1999, when her husband, Sukhbir Singh Yadav, a Deputy Commandant in the Border Security Force (BSF), was killed in the conflict.
From personal loss to public life
The death of her husband during the Kargil conflict became a turning point in Yadav’s life. She subsequently entered politics and became associated with the BJP, gradually establishing herself as a political figure in Haryana.
Her entry into electoral politics came at a time when the country was dealing with the aftermath of the Kargil War. Yadav went on to contest the 1999 Lok Sabha election from the Mahendragarh constituency in Haryana.
In that election, she defeated Congress leader Rao Inderjit Singh, emerging as a prominent BJP representative from the region. Her victory marked a significant milestone in her political career and brought her into national politics.
As a Member of Parliament, Yadav represented Mahendragarh and developed her political profile beyond her home constituency. Her subsequent work within the BJP helped her build a role in the party’s organisational structure.
Rise within the BJP
Yadav’s political career extended beyond parliamentary representation. She took on responsibilities within the BJP and became involved in organisational activities, including work related to the party’s Other Backward Classes (OBC) Morcha.
In 2015, she was given responsibility for the party’s OBC Morcha, reflecting her involvement in organisational work among OBC communities.
Her standing within the party’s national leadership structure grew further in August 2022, when she was inducted into the BJP Parliamentary Board and the Central Election Committee.
The Parliamentary Board is among the BJP’s key decision-making bodies, while the Central Election Committee plays an important role in selecting candidates for elections. Membership of these bodies placed Yadav among the party leaders involved in major organisational and electoral decisions.
Her presence in the Parliamentary Board also attracted attention because she was its only woman member following the death of senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj, as noted in reports about her political career.
Yadav has also served in public roles outside electoral politics, including as a member of the National Commission for Backward Classes from 2019 to 2022, according to reports on her career.
Sudha Yadav’s appointment as Karnataka Governor
President Droupadi Murmu announced Yadav’s appointment on October 12 as part of a wider reshuffle of Governors across six states. The official communiqué stated that the appointments would take effect from the dates on which the appointees assume charge of their respective offices.
Alongside Yadav’s appointment to Karnataka, the reshuffle included changes in the gubernatorial positions of Keralam, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Uttarakhand and Sikkim.
Yadav’s appointment brings her experience in parliamentary politics and party organisation to a constitutional office with responsibilities distinct from those of an active political leader.
The Governor serves as the constitutional head of the state and performs functions in accordance with the Constitution, including responsibilities related to the state government, the legislature and other constitutional processes.
As she prepares to assume office, Yadav’s background in national politics and her long association with the BJP form an important part of her public profile.
A new chapter in her public career
From her early academic pursuits to her entry into politics following the Kargil War, Yadav’s career has included parliamentary representation, organisational responsibilities and participation in the BJP’s national decision-making bodies.
Her appointment as Karnataka Governor marks a transition from party politics to a constitutional role. She is set to become the second woman to occupy the gubernatorial office in Karnataka, following V S Ramadevi’s tenure more than two decades ago.
The appointment adds a new chapter to Yadav’s public life as Karnataka awaits her formal assumption of office.
