Take a walk in the sewage in upmarket Koramangala

Bengaluru: Despite the tag of a hi-tech city, basic civic issues in the city remain. Problems such as overflowing manholes, garbage, lake encroachments and sewage issues continue to fester without effective administrative action. Kormangala known for its upmarket real estate and population too encounters the stench of overflowing manholes.
Many of the commuters struggle hard to escape the stench of the sewage water with overflows directly into the streets of a parallel road stretching towards the Sony signal. This has caused road blocks and an unhygienic atmosphere.

The drainage that broke open almost two months ago remains unrepaired still today. On this tightly packed parallel road bikers park themselves on the footpath to avoid stepping into the sewage water on the road. Pedestrians are constrained by the occupation of the foot path and the sewage water which prevents them from making an easy road crossing.  Mini fights regularly occur on the road due to this mess.

The flow of the sewage water had increased drastically during the rainy season. Now with the South east monsoon due, it will likely get worse. “I struggle every day to cross this road, with the drainage leak riding a bike too is difficult. I wait for hours, it’s so difficult for people to commute like this, and immediate measures have to be taken to clear this mess” said Leela a pedestrian, when approached for her views. A commuter had this to say, “We have tried conveying the message to the concerned person. However it has not had much effect. Many of them feel it’s a small issue – it’s just that the flow happens every now and then. So that is not an issue”. Quite a lackadaisical attitude.

“We are getting used to these issues; the officials are least bothered to fulfil their responsibilities regarding these issues. A few days ago we encountered the trouble of a manhole at the 7th block and now it’s the same issue everyday” says Mhanta a security guard at an office.

Hopefully this report will make them sit up and take notice and do the needful urgently!
