Bengaluru: Bengaluru police have registered a cheating case against a government school teacher accused of posing as a journalist with close links to senior Congress leaders and allegedly duping a woman from Mangaluru of ₹1 crore by promising to secure her a nomination to the Karnataka Legislative Council (MLC).
The case was registered by the Halasuru Gate Police following a court direction.
Woman alleges ₹1 crore fraud
According to the complaint, the accused, Sirigere Yerriswamy (56), allegedly convinced the woman, who is associated with a social trust, that he had close connections with the Congress leadership and could arrange an MLC nomination for her.
Believing his claims, the complainant allegedly paid him ₹1 crore. However, the promised nomination never materialised, prompting her to approach the police.
Misbehaviour allegation in New Delhi
The woman has also accused Yerriswamy of misbehaving with her during a visit to New Delhi in 2025.
She alleged that the accused had taken her to a hotel on the pretext of arranging a meeting with senior leaders of the All India Congress Committee (AICC). During the trip, he allegedly behaved inappropriately with her, according to the complaint.
The allegations are part of the FIR, and police are investigating the claims.
Three booked in the case
Apart from Yerriswamy, the police have also booked his associates, Siddaraju and Basavaraju, in connection with the alleged fraud.
The case was registered on July 27 after the complainant obtained a court order directing the police to investigate the matter.
Police have initiated an investigation into the allegations of cheating, criminal conspiracy and other offences. Further action will be taken based on the evidence gathered during the probe.
