A 25-year-old tech professional from B Narayanapura was duped of ₹1.46 lakh by a fraudster posing as an IPL ticket seller on Instagram, highlighting the rising threat of online scams linked to high-demand events.

Fraudster posed as stadium official

According to a complaint filed at the Mahadevapura police station, the accused introduced himself as Sumit Biswal and claimed to be a senior supervisor at the ticket counter of M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. He promised to arrange tickets along with food coupons and exclusive access benefits.

The victim was reportedly convinced by the fraudster’s claims, including an email confirmation sent to appear legitimate.

Multiple payments made under false promises

The accused initially offered two tickets priced at ₹3,700 each for the much-anticipated RCB vs CSK match scheduled on Sunday. However, he later demanded additional payments citing refundable security deposits, extra ID cards, and food coupons.

Trusting the claims, the victim transferred money through multiple UPI transactions from both his own and his mother’s bank accounts, eventually losing ₹1.46 lakh.

Victim lured to stadium with false assurances

The complainant stated that the fraudster asked him to come near Gate No. 10 of the stadium, assuring that the tickets would be delivered within minutes. However, no one turned up, and the accused stopped responding after receiving the money.

Police confirmed that neither the tickets were delivered nor the amount refunded.

Police urge caution amid rising online scams

Authorities have warned citizens to remain cautious while purchasing tickets online, especially through unofficial platforms or social media. They have advised verifying sources and avoiding advance payments to unknown sellers.

An investigation has been launched to trace the accused and uncover any wider network behind such fraudulent activities.
