As the world marks 200 years since the first permanent photograph was captured by French inventor Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, Bengaluru’s vibrant photography community is celebrating the art form that continues to document life, culture, and change.

Photography clubs across the city say Bengaluru remains one of India’s most rewarding cities to photograph, offering a blend of heritage, technology, greenery, and diverse communities.

A city full of stories

For Manish S, founder of IgersOfBangalore, photography began as a personal effort to showcase the city he loves. Over the years, it evolved into a thriving community of photographers documenting Bengaluru’s many faces.

According to photographers, the city offers endless opportunities to capture cultural events, food traditions, historic markets, and everyday life. Bengaluru’s pleasant weather and green spaces also make outdoor photography easier compared to many other Indian cities.

Members of Bangalore PhotoWalks and the Newbies Photo Club point to the city’s striking contrasts as a major attraction. Modern glass towers standing beside traditional markets, and street vendors operating near technology hubs, create unique visual narratives.

Photography and responsibility

While photography has become more accessible than ever, photographers say public attitudes have changed. Many people are now more cautious about being photographed, especially in public spaces.

Photography enthusiasts believe this makes ethical photography more important than ever. Seeking consent, respecting privacy, and approaching subjects with empathy are now considered essential practices.

They emphasise that photographs have the power to influence perceptions and preserve stories, making responsible storytelling a key part of the craft.

Preserving memories for future generations

The Youth Photographic Society, one of Bengaluru’s oldest photography organisations, sees the bicentenary as a reminder of the medium’s remarkable evolution—from glass negatives and film cameras to digital devices and smartphones.

Despite technological changes, photographers agree that the heart of photography remains unchanged: preserving emotions, memories, and moments that might otherwise be lost to time.

As photography enters its third century, Bengaluru’s photographers continue to document the city’s transformation while ensuring its stories endure for future generations.#Photography #Bengaluru #PhotoWalks #ArtAndCulture #HistoryOfPhotography #newskarnataka
